Team Introduction

The Flyers Softball Team began life in 1994 as the Harvey Ballbangers and was formed in time for the inaugural Jersey Softball Association League, which began on 11th May of that year. The basis of the team was mainly players from the disbanded Fort Regent Cannons, together with new players to the game from Alex Picot and Company.  That first season shaped the philosophy of the team, supporting team-mates and enjoying the game, which remains to this day.  Although there have been teams with more ability in the League, none have surpassed the team ethic displayed by the Flyers.  In fact, the team’s camaraderie over the years has been the envy of many and is the main reason for its longevity.

The Flyers have made a large contribution to the setting up of the Jersey Softball Association and to the continual success of the League.  Team members have been an integral part of Jersey Softball since its inception, by taking positions on the Executive Committee, coaching and managing the Island teams and also umpiring. A number of team members have also represented the Island and the Channel Islands and won Most Valuable Player awards over the years.

During the regular season the team’s batting and fielding statistics are maintained by the team’s scorer and awards are made at the Jersey Softball Association’s end of season dinner.

Wiki Facts & Stats

The Flyers are the only remaining team left playing since the outdoor league started in 1994. The Flyers took the first at-bat and made the first hit of the inaugural outdoor league, against the Eagles. The Flyers were the first ever team to use a “Ringer” in the outdoor league, at the start of the 2009 season. The Flyers played their 225th league game, against HSBC Devils, on 6th June, 2010. Over 300 players have represented the Flyers since the team’s formation.

    Match reports

    Match 1 13 May 2012 1PM  Pitch 1

The Eleven ISS Flyers’ first fixture of the 2012 Outdoor Softball season was an all First
Division clash against CPA Global Pirates. As the away team, the Flyers batted first and put
their first run on the board, which the Pirates more than matched with three of their own.

From that point on the Pirates’ defence took over the game. The Flyers’ batters were unable
to penetrate their opponent’s defence with any great success and found it difficult to drive
runners over Home Plate. The Flyers’ defence, although playing well, could not prevent the
Pirates’ batters from reaching the outfield and they scored in all their innings.

The Flyers’ offence did get going again in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring two and one run
respectively. However, the Flyers went into their last innings with an almost impossible task
to make the Pirates bat again. With only four Flyers’ batters making an appearance at the
Plate, and without a run being scored, the Pirates ran out deserved 28 – 4 winners.

Despite the low run count for the Flyers, there were good batting performances from Ray
Foster, Vics Hibbs, Dom Alfano and Captain Chris Le Lion. In the field, Beth Rosser had
an excellent game at Third Base, which was matched by Sarah Cann at Second Base. Phil
Bouchard also had a good game with the glove in his familiar Right Centre position and it
won him the Flyers’ player-of-the-match award.
